The Western Gneiss Complex runs along the west coast of Norway. It is dominated by Proterozoic felsic gneisses and eclogite bodies. The eclogites formed during the westwards subduction of the Baltican margin beneath under Laurentia during the Caledonian Orogeny ca. 450 Ma. The Western Gneiss Complex is the focus of Sean’s PhD, investigating the potential exhumation mechanisms for the terrane as well as developing of new techniques to aid this.
Below are selection of images from fieldwork undertaken in the Western Gneiss region during May 2018 and 2019. Our fieldwork to the Western Gneiss Complex has most recently been funded by the Australian Research Council to look at this system with a view to applying our findings to better understand the rock systems that are beneath our feet in Australia.
