Himanshu Sekhar Bal

Having completed my masters degree in geology at IIT Bombay, India, I have developed a solid foundation in the geology and geochemistry in particular. My masters research focussed on the metamorphic evolution and geochemistry of the Sandmata Complex, Aravalli craton, providing me with valuable hands-on experience in utilizing advanced geochemical instruments including the ICP MS and the ICP AES.

My internships at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IISER Bhopal, and PRL, Ahmedabad, enriched my understanding of geological processes. Working at the LA ICP MS and the AMS labs during these internships deepened my interest in instrumentation.

Under the guidance of Prof. Chris Clark, Prof. Chris Kirkland, and Dr. David Kelsey (GSWA) at Curtin University, sponsored by MinEX CRC, I am currently focused on extracting petrochronological information from low sample volumes (drill cores) in the West Arunta – Aileron Province of Western Australia. This region, located in the remote Gibson Desert area approximately 130 kilometers west of the NT/WA border, presents logistical challenges for exploration due to its limited infrastructure and remote location.

My research aims to utilize limited sample resources to gain insights into the geochronology of the area using techniques such as Lu–Hf, U–Pb, and other methods on potentially datable minerals.
